Sherlock Holmes + Calabash Pipe
I was flabbergasted to discover that the original Sherlock Holmes never actually smoked a Calabash Pipe. It was all a theatrical stunt which brought this infamous image of Sherlock Holmes smoking a Calabash Pipe to the forefront (read below). Sherlock Holmes’s character, some say, was based on his creator, Arthur Conan Doyle. Doyle enjoyed smoking a pipe or two and passed on this hereditary habit to his created character, Sherlock Holmes. It was also common for actors playing a character who smoked to use a Calabash Pipe because it was easier for the audience to see because of its size. And this is where the connection between Sherlock Holmes and the Calabash Pipe began.
